Wow! Must be a relief to have that publicly announced. I would ask a billion questions prompted by the imaginings I am now having, but I rather suspect you cannot answer them and anyway it would be annoying.

Congratulations on working on such a big project; I hope it's as much fun as it must be hard work!

My favorite systems take this out of my hands. FATE, for example, lets the GM give the players fate points (game currency, useful for being more effective when necessary, if you aren't familiar with the game) in return for their lives becoming more difficult. Although it's ultimately the GM's call, players can "prompt" the GM: "you know, it would be totally awesome if my character ended up with one of those brain parasites, and all it'll cost you is a fate point..."

Other games - like Houses of the Blooded (which uses a variant of FATE) - allow the winner of a roll to narrate, which can include narrating their character's failure and how it advances the story in the player's direction.

But when I play games that don't do that? I totally allow players to fail forward when they feel like it.

If you can get the Wilderlands boxed set that White Wolf did with Necromancer a few years ago, I highly recommend it. It's got tons upon tons upon tons of hex descriptions, many of which could be improvised into an entire session themselves. Plus an actual Frazetta cover.

Despite the name, the Wilderlands of High Fantasy are more sword and sorcery with D&D-isms than what we call "high fantasy" today. The terms were used differently when they were created.

Probably worth mentioning: the quick start rules don't specify what size dice the Wushu system uses. Mind you, neither do the Wushu Open rules, though they do mention a Trait maximum of 5, which allows me to deduce I should be using six sided dice. ;)

I've been looking for some quick one-shot things to try out new systems - and this is going to be my entrance into Wushu, which I've read about before but never tried. It looks great!
